I’m not a sporty girl. I probably know less about sports than I do about monsters. But after watching Leroy run up and down the field in a pair of black athletic shorts and a light-gray T-shirt that’s now sweat-soaked and sticking to his lean, muscled upper body, I’m a new fan of football. Don’t ask me to explain the rules of the game because I’m still clueless about the how. I only know why I suddenly like it, and he’s currently shaking hands and buddy-slapping the other monsters on the field.

“Good game.”

“Nice play.”

“Thought you were going to send me to the hospital with that tackle in the end zone.”

Everyone Leroy talks to on the way off the field gets a different comment. My snake man is one heck of a people person.

My snake man. There’s a thought I never in my life expected to have. Still, it lingers, warming me from the inside out as I enjoy the last few seconds of prime ogling time remaining.

“Well,” he says when he reaches the small set of wooden bleachers where I’m sitting. “How do you feel about us monsters now? A bit more at ease?”

Honestly, if he handed me a pop quiz requiring me to list the different monsters who’d shared the field, I’d be lucky to get the minimum passing grade. Not because of the variety is too much to remember. They just didn’t register in my brain. I was too busy watching Leroy.

“I don’t feel scared at all,” I say, omitting the fact that I’m referring entirely to him.

“Perfect. That means you’ll be unpacking that suitcase when you get back to your room.”

I nod because it’s less of a fib than using words. He doesn’t need to know I unpacked after the motorcycle ride. Okay, technically, I unpacked after the post-motorcycle-ride activity, which took more time than I thought it would. Apparently, I had a lot of pent-up stuff to get out of my system. The way my body is humming right now, it would seem there’s still more.

“Ready to go?” he asks, collecting his small duffel bag from the bench beside me.

I give another nod as I hop to the ground. “I really enjoyed watching you play.”

“And I enjoyed watching you watch.”

“You barely stood still for two seconds. I’m surprised you had time to notice.”

He meets my gaze as our feet crunch the parking lot gravel in synchronized steps. “I noticed. I haven’t been able to stop noticing since you walked into the motel yesterday.”

My heart is pounding in my chest by the time we reach his car, where he opens and holds the passenger door for me. “You saw the note I left you last night, right?”

“I did.”

“It’s probably too late for dinner now, but maybe we could do that tomorrow night, since I’m staying in town to write the article?”

“I’d love to take you out,” he says, his tongue flicking out.

Heat rushes through me at the sight of it. His tongue didn’t make an appearance during the football game, I’m sure of it.
